Colleges and Universities

Northwestern Ontario has one publicly-funded college, two universities and several private training colleges. Together, these institutions offer a full range of world-class arts and sciences courses, professional and apprenticeship programs, skills and career training, and continuing education courses. You will find some of the best educational experiences in the world right here.

Confederation College: This publicly-funded, post-secondary institution serves the wider education needs of Northwestern Ontario residents and beyond. Confederation College has its main campus in Thunder Bay and area campuses located in Dryden, Fort Frances, Geraldton, Kenora, Marathon and Sioux Lookout. The college offers a full range of programs and educational services throughout the region; full-time post-secondary programs, part-time credit and non-credit courses, specialty programs for business and industry, pre-employment and skills training programs; apprenticeship programs and cooperative/workplace training programs. Many of these educational services utilize a combination of traditional and distance education delivery.

Lakehead University: This award winning university was ranked number one in Canada for “Value-Added” and is recognized internationally for its quality teaching and student achievement. With some 7,600 students from Canada and overseas, Lakehead University offers undergraduate and postgraduate education in nine faculties: Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Forestry and the Forest Environment, Graduate Studies, Medical School, Professional Studies, Science and Environmental Studies and Social Sciences and Humanities.

Northern Ontario School of Medicine NOSM is Canada’s newest medical school in over 30 years and welcomed its first students in 2005. It is a joint initiative of Lakehead University in Thunder Bay and Laurentian University in Sudbury with a focus on educating and retaining medical professionals in the north. Learners can expect a high quality educational experience that offers one-on-one teaching and hands-on experience in a wide range of medical learning situations. Clinical learning sites include Sudbury, Thunder Bay and Sioux Lookout, as well as smaller centres throughout Northern Ontario.
