The International Baccalaureate or “IB” Program is governed by The International Baccalaureate®, a foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland. The program is designed to help students aged 3 to 19 years to develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills needed to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world.
The program is offered in three phases and provides a wider course of learning than regional education standards. Throughout its phases, which overlay local curricula and may be taken individually or as a continuum, the program broadens the student’s perspective, teaches learning skills, encourages free-thinking and includes linguistic components designed to enable the student to adapt to a global society.
The Primary Years Program, for students aged 3 to 12 years, focuses on the development of the child in the classroom and in the world outside. The Middle Years Program, for students aged 11 to 16 years, both encompasses and goes beyond traditional academic studies to provide students with more academic challenges and life skills.
The demanding two-year Diploma Program is for students aged 16 to 19 and has rigorous examinations and essays. Upon graduation students receive a qualification which is recognized by leading universities throughout the world.
Secondary School IB Programs in Northwestern Ontario are offered at
Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate Vocational Institute in Thunder Bay.
