Tenants Rights

A tenant is a person or a group who agree to rent a place to live from another person or group.

Having access to safe and affordable rental housing is important to the well-being of Northwestern Ontario’s families. Every tenant in our region has legal rights and the freedom to enforce those rights to ensure that they have a safe place to live.

Renting in Ontario is regulated and governed by the Landlord and Tenant Board. Tenants are protected under the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), which came into effect in January of 2007. The act establishes rules for most residential housing in Ontario and provides protection for tenants from any illegal circumstances. The act includes regulations about Tenancy Agreements, Responsibility of Landlords, Pets, Evictions, Maintenance & Repairs and Responsibility of Tenants, among others.
